Gcina studied Journalism at Rhodes University, where she started her career in media by reading the news for BBC Radio and writing for the magazine 'Learn and Teach'. Storytelling has taken Gcina Mhlope to all corners of the world. She has travelled extensively as a visiting lecturer locally and abroad, to Brandeis University, Boston, USA; Kyoto Sayka University in Japan; Edge Hill and Lancashire, England.

She was a lead in 'Umongikasi – The Nurse' by Maishe Maponya, which later toured England, Ireland, Holland and Switzerland. Mhlophe’s repertoire contains many stories for children. Her published books include 'A Mother’s Search for Stories' (1995) and 'Molo Zoleka' (1994), for which she won the Book Chat Award. After 'Stories of Africa' (2003) another illustrated volume of fairy tales was published entitled 'Our Story Magic' (2006). She was also the director of Zanendaba Storytellers in Johannesburg, an organisation committed to promoting and preserving the ancient art form of 'storytelling' and introducing this into the schools syllabus.

Gcina is still first and foremost a performer. She appears in numerous international music programmes and has featured in many films and television broadcasts, as well as radio. Her musical partners include Francis and Patric Bebey, Sam Shabalala, the Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

She has been awarded honorary doctorates by both London University and Natal University for her work. Other awards include an OBIE Award for 'Best Actress in New York 1987' and the 'Joseph Jefferson Award' in Chicago, 1998. Gcina is fluent in Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and English. is internationally renowned as a poet, playwright, actress, short story writer and storyteller and is best described as a multimedia performer. She is a well-known television and radio personality.
